Later

It seems that I never have time to blog for me or L lately, but my mind is a continuous flow of words and phrases I want to share with all of you. L is growing up quickly before our eyes. As much as we try to stop time and enjoy every second of his travesuras, we blink and he's a few months older, a few words wiser and doing tricks we thought he was still too young for. It's bittersweet.

His newest thing is saying "later" for everything.

Us: L, it's time for nite-nite.
Him: Nite nite waaayter!
Us: L, it's time to eat.
Him: Eat waaayter!
Us: L, it's time for school.
Him: Kool waaaayter!!
Us: L, it's bath-time.
Him: Batime waaaayter!!

You get the picture. I have to try to hard not to laugh. Anything that interrupts him from the task at hand, usually playing with his cars or make believe, is the recipient of his adamant exclamation that it can be done later.

He's still getting sick often. It's a frustrating roller coaster although I have to stop and count my blessings that his are just colds and inconvenient bugs and not more serious illnesses. I've been trying really hard not to complain about it and just hope that once the put-everything-in-his-mouth stage is completely over he'll start getting better. That, and maybe switching schools will help. I don't know if the school has anything to do with it, but I don't like the fact that the "booger" policy isn't really enforced much. I still see kids with lime-green snot dripping down their noses when I drop him off. And every time I do, I cringe because I know that within a week, L will have whatever bug that is.

We cancelled our New Year's Disney trip because he got sick right after Christmas, after having been slightly sick a week before. Then, a week after he finished his antibiotic for that ear infection, I had to rush to the doctor's office because he had an awful night of screaming, holding his ear, complaining of "noise," and just being miserable all over. Turns out, he had another ear infection which was most likely the same infection from before that didn't react to the antibiotic. So he was prescribed a new, different antibiotic that apparently tastes awful. He didn't take to it and we had to take him back to get an antibiotic shot, which left him rather traumatized for a bit; then, though, it was easier to get him to take the liquid form and he seems to feel better.

We had scheduled a Disney trip for MLK weekend, but that's when this whole thing with the second ear infection happened, so we rescheduled for later. That was rather a blessing in disguise, however, because we decided to start potty training. It was more of a "let's see what happens when I put on regular underwear" and it turned into full-on potty training because he was doing so well! We started Sun and by Mon afternoon, he was staying dry! His teachers are continuing in school. My baby is getting to be such a big boy. Snif snif. He gets all excited when he does pee or poor in the potty; he exclaims gleefully, "I did it!" We are so proud of him.

There was a funny moment that I wanted to share. After he woke up from his nap on Mon, I put on some little boxers; I didn't have the underwear handy and I didn't want to put a diaper on. So we went downstairs in the boxers and I started doing stuff around the house. All of a sudden I see him in the corner of the living room, by the side table with the picture frames. He's standing still and his legs are slightly separated at an odd angle. I ask him what happened and he says, "Oh! Caca!" When I go over to him, I see a lump of poop on the tile floor, and the sticky trail it left was evident on his leg. I picked him up and ran to the bathroom with him where he "finished" his business. I was laughing and he was laughing. "Caca on the floor!" was all he could say. My big boy. I'm laughing remembering that.

This morning, after he woke up, before we got dressed for school, I asked if he wanted to go potty and he did. He did pee in the potty and then I dressed him with pull-ups for school. Even Gymbo the clown puppet gets to clap and celebrate the accomplishments!

All this has me thinking that it's time we start considering having #2. L is getting so big and he's such a big helper. We were watching him sleep today and his body is nearly the length of his toddler bed. He's getting ready for a real, twin bed. When that happens, his toddler bed can be converted back into a crib if we needed it. That means back to sleepless nights, night wakings, breast feeding, itty-bitty infant. But L would be such an amazing big brother.... and I don't want him to be an only child. He should have someone to complain to that has the same parents! ;) So that's where we're at. We'll see where this year takes us.
